Tip earners getting shortchanged by the system.
Attention, tip-earning employees!! Did you realize that you have been penalized by an unfair salary scale? Yes!! Look what’s happening. If you receive a lower wage than non-tip employees, it would appear that your employer effectively pockets some or most of your gratuities. If your employer were obliged to raise your salary the moment you stop receiving tips for any reason, it proves my point even further.
What can you do to remedy this injustice? Perhaps not very much, for now, except to be aware of the situation. Expressing your frustration might provoke the boss. And even though it may be tempting to garner sympathy from friendly customers by lamenting “Did you know that part of the tip you gave me effectively goes into my employer’s pocket?”, I should caution against doing so. For several reasons.

I predict that tip-earning employees will eventually fight to regain what they have lost, by utilizing 1 or more of the following strategies.
[[1]] Voting for political candidates who promise to eliminate the gap between tipped and non-tipped minimum wage. Just an idea.
[[2]] The following is particularly a prediction, not a suggestion!! Throwing a monkey wrench in the machinery. Refusing to accept tips during 1 week or even as long as 1 month. Thus, for the purpose of salary scale, becoming non-tipped employees. Jamming up an employer’s paperwork in this manner, but only if it is legal to do so. Best of all, during that time, the employer will not be entitled to pocket one bit of the workers’ tips. Because there are no gratuities to be pocketed, temporarily. At least in theory. Local regulations may vary. Please check to be sure. Certainly, there is a category “employees receiving tips”. But, logic suggests, workers do not belong to that category if they refuse to accept tips. And to the best of my knowledge, an employee is not obliged to accept gratuities. At least in most cases.
Needless to say, care and discretion is warranted when using any tactics which might present some risk, such as getting fired, for example.

Warning!! Putting some of these ideas to actual use could easily get you fired and/or cause additional difficulties. In case of any doubt or fear, please abstain from utilizing radical tactics. In any event, please consult legal counsel prior to making waves or rocking the boat [figure of speech] by implementing any ideas described on this page.
