Spendthrifts
are a menace to society and probably to themselves as well,
particularly if they habitually spend much more than they can really
afford. Individuals who constantly and persistently act as if money
grows on trees need to reconsider their conduct. Because such
recklessness endangers the economic well-being of the rest of us. The
rest of us - hopefully the majority - are sober people who appreciate
the value of a dollar [or Pound, or Euro - whatever you use for local
currency]. We do not act like money is no object. But these
careless-spending individuals provoke many companies to overcharge
consumers in general. The consequences are profound and far-reaching.
For example, when travelling, you may have difficulty finding a
moderately priced and overall decent motel room. Why? Because of the
multitude of travellers who charge their room to a company expense
account and don't really care how much it costs. Another example: some
car rental companies offer only larger, luxurious, more expensive
vehicles. Obviously another result of customers with a
money-is-no-object attitude.Spendthrifts are a menace to society. The gap between haves and have-nots widens, therefore worsens. No doubt, many or most haves would claim just the opposite: widens = improves. Yeah, so what’s really new? But hey, here’s a real cool existential question. Would you rather be a have or a have-not? How about somewhere in the middle: a have-some? Just an idea. To find out more about this progressive concept, Disclaimer regarding this article and particularly the paragraphs below: I do not hold a degree in economics, sociology, psychology or philosophy, nor any other relevant or irrelevant field. Nor is it ever my intention to wrongly or mistakenly create the impression of holding a degree or any official qualifications. The material contained on this page may be characterized as practical tips, ideas and observations at the most, and is in no way intended to provide or replace professional advice of any sort. Careless spending could probably be also regarded as symptomatic of another pervasive social disease: lack of self-esteem. This ailment manifests itself in many ways. Throwing money around is perhaps the most easily noticeable expression of such a condition. Possibly one of the most common indicators, as well. Other warning signs of low or missing self-esteem might include consuming too much junk food too often. Eating all kinds of dubious products without regard to the list of ingredients, and ignoring any possible long-term health consequences. Individuals who in any manner exhibit destructive tendencies as described here, would be well-advised to seek qualified help. End of
