I bought 2.75 kilograms of bananas at 47 cents a pound.
17 May 2004. Prices posted in pounds only. Scale for customer use weighs food products in kilograms only. Go figure. The local system is officially metric. Most scales conform. But pricing does not. And to top it off, this device still carries the manufacturer’s sticker which clearly reads “Not legal for trade”. Another example of a big-name supermarket trying to get away with playing smoke-and-mirrors tricks with consumers’ wallets. This type of misconduct probably warrants an official complaint. I immediately considered using one of the payphones located on the premises, exactly for that purpose. But then I reflected: how many minutes will I be kept on hold and have to listen to generic elevator music because, as the recording usually says “All of our representatives are currently busy. Please stay on the line. Someone will be with you shortly.” Or similar phrasing. From experience, I have learned that “shortly” can easily mean up to half an hour or more. It probably sounds familiar to most consumers. So I gave up on the idea of making that call.
But on a more ambitious scale, I seriously consider assembling a team of professional complainers at some time in the future. No doubt, I will be doing society a favour. Perhaps I will even be so bold as to describe my new efforts as a progressive form of philanthropy. Who knows. But stay tuned, during the medium-long-term future.
